Message of the Hon. President

Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society Was established under cornea grafting act No 38 of 1955. This is a government approved charity Organization .The pioneer of this organization is late Lion Deshabandu Dr. Hudson Silva. The International Eye Bank was begun in 1961 with the hope of serving the people to regain their lost eye sight.

In 1964 we were able to start our services internationally by sending 1st shipment of 06 corneas to Singapore. Since then the noble concept of “Eye Donation” Spread not only in Sri Lanka but also internationally. Further expanding the services of Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society, the Human Tissue Bank was established in 1996 by the human tissue graft act No. 48 which was passed in Parliament in 1987. Under the auspicious of International Atomic Energy Agency.

Up to now august 2019 we have donated 49,225 Corneas to Sri Lankan recipients and 77,861 Corneas to recipients in 117 towns in 57 countries.

In addition we have donated over 50,000 corneas for research and development purposes within Sri Lanka and abroad. The Operations of Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society were decentralized by the establishment of 08 main centers in out stations with qualified technicians in each center. In addition we have 450 branches spread throughout this country. These centers and branches are used for collection (under sterile condition) only. Processing and preparing of corneas is done at the Central Eye Bank of Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society. By Signing consent forms 1.6 million persons all over the country have officially consented to donate their eyes after death.

Similarly the Human Tissue Bank fulfills the role of obtaining tissues from Cadavers and preparing them according to WHO standards for the purpose of grafting. Radiation methods are used for sterilization and the tissues so sterilized are stored at – 80˚C and issued to needy hospitals in Sri Lanka and foreign counties as well. The above facts prove the enormous charitable services rendered by the society, only on request for needy hospitals internationally.

This website gives a lot more details about the society and the valuable services we offer, our history vision and values.

Our success would not be possible without the Contribution of our donors and dedicated members and employees who have shared in our incredible journey thus for. We look forward to continuing to serve and support all of you in our efforts to exceed expectations.

Thanking you for taking the time to visit the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society Website.

Providing an opportunity for a blind man to see the World is a highly meritorious act. I wish that this selfless service to humanity to flourish and reach truly sublime heights until the world is exist.
