Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society Was established under cornea grafting act No 38 of 1955. This is a government approved charity Organization .The pioneer of this organization is late Lion Deshabandu Dr. Hudson Silva. The International Eye Bank was begun in 1961 with the hope of serving the people to regain their lost eye sight.
In 1964 we were able to start our services internationally by sending 1st shipment of 06 corneas to Singapore. Since then the noble concept of “Eye Donation” Spread not only in Sri Lanka but also internationally. Further expanding the services of Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society, the Human Tissue Bank was established in 1996 by the human tissue graft act No. 48 which was passed in Parliament in 1987. Under the auspicious of International Atomic Energy Agency.
Up to now august 2019 we have donated 49,225 Corneas to Sri Lankan recipients and 77,861 Corneas to recipients in 117 towns in 57 countries.
